Analysis

Finnish poker pro Samuel Vousden has become one of the most successful online tournament players in the world in recent years. In this hand Vousden unleashed calculated bet sizings to help extract the maximum from his opponent. The action began with Vousden min-raising from the cutoff with pocket kings. Dutch player Luc Van Der Beek called from the small blind with A-10 offsuit. The flop brought a paired board with two diamonds and Van Der Beek elected to check-call with his ace-high, which could very well have been the best hand given that Vousden should have a fairly wide range when opening from the cutoff. Vousden’s continuation bet was small, just 1,520,000 into the pot of 4,600,000. This smaller sizing helps keep weaker hands like Van Der Beek’s in the pot, allowing Vousden to put him in tough spots on later streets. The turn brought the 10™, giving Van Der Beek tens up. He checked to Vousden, who increased his sizing to full-pot on the turn. This larger bet sizing will allow Vousden to extract more value in situations like this, where his opponent has a worse value hand. The sizing will also make Vousden’s bet more likely to get through when he is bluffing, because bigger bets will offer worse odds for an opponent to call. As a result, Van Der Beek was put in a tough position, as he could expect Vousden to unleash this sizing with both strong hands and the very weakest holdings in his range. Van Der Beek made the call, and the pot ballooned to 22,920,000. Both Vousden and Van Der Beek had around a pot-sized bet remaining in their stacks. Vousden moved all-in after the 4® completed the board, and Van Der Beek made the call. His hand was second-best, and he hit the rail in sixth place earning €34,894.
