- Ty Stewart, the WSOP’s executive director, said in a press release Friday that, “there must be a world champion in 2020.” So, on Nov. 29, the quest for the 2020 WSOP Main Event champion begins on.
- The World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) is the first expansion effort of World Series of Poker-branded poker tournaments outside the United States. Since 1970, participants had to travel to Las Vegas if.
- The other entity involved in this is Caesars and the WSOP itself. A look at their website shows that any reference to a “2020 World Series of Poker Europe” has been scrubbed from the page.
The final table of the “International Bracket” of the 2020 World Series of Poker Main Event on GGPoker has been determined, with nine of the original 674 players still standing. Leading the way is Brazil’s Brunno Botteon with 10,317,743 chips. Nobody is within 4,000,000 of him.
So ends the online portion of the Main Event on the international side (I apologize to those who don’t live in the United States for such US-centric terminology, but that’s what the WSOP and GGPoker are using). From here, the final table moves to King’s Casino in Rozvadvov, Czech Republic on the German border on December 15.
The WSOP and the players are going to have to scramble to make travel arrangements, as all nine players are from different countries, a few of which are not remotely close to the Czech Republic. Two players live in South America and one lives in China. Fortunately, the Czech Repubic is centrally located in Europe, but even the players from Spain and Portugal have a bit of a trek coming up.
All remaining players must also take COVID-19 tests before the live final table. If a player tests positive, he is not permitted to play and will receive the minimum payout still available (so if one out of the nine tests positive, that player will receive ninth place money).
Still aiming for Vegas
The winner of the King’s Casino final table will travel to Las Vegas and take on the winner of the U.S. Bracket at the Rio – the normal home of the World Series of Poker – on December 28. The winner of that heads-up match will receive an additional $1 million and be declared the 2020 WSOP Main Event champ.
Almost every at the International Bracket final table is known to some extent in the poker world. Of note is Damian Salas, currently in third place, who finished seventh in the 2017 Main Event.
The tournament had three starting flights, with Day 1A taking place last Sunday, November 29. Participants in Day 1B and Day 1C had to wait until this past weekend to give it a go. Day 1A attracted 246 players, Day 1B drew 171 entries and Day 1C just edged out the first flight, bringing in 257 players. Normally at the World Series of Poker, Day 1C blows the other two starting flights away, because of the scheduling, but since this is online, players didn’t really need to worry about timing, just which day was most convenient for them. And since this is the WSOP Main Event, it is a freezeout, just like always.

The international leg of the 2020 World Series of Poker Main Event has reached its final table and that takes place at the King’s Resort in Rozvadov, Czech Republic on December 16. PokerNews is previewing each of the nine lucky finalists. We've already covered the three shortest stacks, and yesterday we covered the middle stacks, but today we take a look at the top three as we head into the final table.
Brunno Botteon - Brazil - 10,317,743 (52 big blinds)
Brunno Botteon is no stranger to the WSOP on GGPoker, cashing 15 times during the WSOP Online between July and September. His best result came when he finished second to Fedor Holz in the $25,000 Heads Up for $622,300. Botteon also finished sixth in the $25,000 Poker Players Championship for a further $388,837.
Botteon told SuperPoker that making the final table of the World Series of Poker Main Event is the ultimate for any poker player.
'The final two tables were very tough,' he said. 'I was short when 11 players left with seven big blinds, but I managed to get back on top.
'Pure emotion...my year has been sensational, regardless of this result.'
Manuel 'robocup' Ruivo - Portugal - 6,213,759 (31 big blinds)
Second in chips is Portugal's Manuel Ruivo who will be heading to King's Resort looking to secure the biggest WSOP cash of his career.
His best result so far is a sixth place finish in the 2018 Millionaire Maker for $230,120, meaning Ruivo would have to finish at least sixth.
A lover of the outdoors, including fishing, Ruivo says he is an avid watcher of movies. His favorite film? Fight Club.
And although he may have a fight on his hands with chip leader Botteon, Ruivo says that to win the Main Event would be an incredible achievement and 'the pinnacle of [his] career.'
Damian Salas - Argentina - 5,653,528 (28 big blinds)
Damian Salas will be a familiar face to WSOP fans after his seventh-place finish in the 2017 World Series of Poker Main Event

Salas says that winning the WSOP Main Event title wouldn't change much for his life, but recognises it as the highest goal a professional poker player can set for themselves.
'I have the great privilege of living how I want and sharing life with those I love. I would continue with the same life that I have, but with the joy of having fulfilled my greatest desire in my life.'
